Crewe had pulled out of the running to sign Alex John-Baptiste, having been put off by the £250,000 asking price put on the defender by the Stags.
Crewe manager Dario Gradi has said "Mansfield want a substantial amount of money for their boy. His agent was keen on bringing him down here, but I've avoided that."
