Injured Mansfield Town striker Chris Beardsley is being targeted to make his comback from injury in February.

The summer signing from Kidderminster broke his leg in only his fourth game back for the Stags, in a 3-2 defeat against near-neighbours Notts County, but he has now returned to light training and manager Peter Shirtliff reckons he's on schedule to return within three months.

'The timescale which was initially set for Chris, which was to have him back before New Year, was on the optimistic side,' admitted Shirtliff.

'But he's back to light running now and progressing well. We're hoping he'll be back sooner rather than later and we reckon it'll be around February.'

Beardsley on comeback trail

Mansfield manager Peter Shirtliff has pencilled in leg-break victim Chris Beardsley for a comeback in February.

The 21-year-old striker sustained the injury just 42 minutes into his fourth appearance for the Stags.

But after recovering from that setback in the 3-2 defeat to visiting Notts county back in August, Beardsley returned to running work on Wednesday.

Shirtliff said: "The timescale which was initially set for Chris - which was to have him back before New Year - was on the optimistic side.

"But he's back to light running now and progressing well.

"We're hoping he'll be back sooner rather than later and we reckon it'll be around February."
