Stags - White op as Stags check out trial keepers

WITH Jason White recovering from an operation, Mansfield Town are likely to use one of two on-trial goalkeepers in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Rotherham United tomorrow(Wednesday).
Stags have a Polish keeper and one from South Africa in to look at.
And former Stags keeper Andy Beasley has agreed to help run the rule over them for manager Peter Shirtliff.

Jason White has had a knee operation after suffering discomfort in pre-season training.

But Shirtliff said it was unlikely to prevent him being involved in some of the pre-season matches.

"Jason was suffering some discomfort and we had it checked out," he said.
"It just needed a bit of a trim in there and should only keep him out for a couple of weeks.

"If everything goes according to plan Jason should still be involved in some of the pre-season friendlies."

In the meantime, Shirtliff will be having a look at a couple of on-trial keepers offered to him by agents.

And Andy Beasley, who has worked as Nottingham Forest goalkeeping coach in recent seasons, will be coming in to help assess them, though Shirtliff could not confirm if Beasley would be further involved when the season starts.

He said: "Andy has left Forest and has agreed to come in and work with these lads and then give me a report on their potential.

"That's as far as it goes at the moment. We then have the game at Rotherham to maybe try one out in a match situation.

"They were offered to us by agents and I checked out their backgrounds before agreeing.

"You never know. Something may come of it and it doesn't hurt to look."
Although delighted to bring in winger Matt Hamshaw, Shirtliff has been frustrated in his pursuit of two other targets and is having to set his sights elsewhere.

"One of them has signed for another club and the other is very unlikely to come due to the money involved. There is an outside chance but I will probably have to look elsewhere.

"I am still hopeful we can make a couple of additions before the season starts."

After the Rotherham outing today, the real pre-season action begins in earnest next Wednesday with the visit of Derby County to Field Mill (7.45pm).
Central defender Rhys Day, released from Stags at the end of last season, has joined Conference side Aldershot.

The start of the league season may still be a couple of months away for Mansfield Town Ladies, but they played their first pre-season friendly in preparation for the new campaign against FA Women's Premier Division side Birmingham City Ladies at Forest Town Welfare on Sunday afternoon.

And Birmingham, who brought along a strong squad, including England International Laura Bassett, romped to a 7-1 success.

With just 42 seconds on the clock, Mansfield stunned the visitors by taking the lead through Shelley Smith.

But Birmingham began to settle and their chances increased, and on 16 minutes they had a close range chance tipped onto the crossbar by Stags keeper Emma Horsnall.

With a strong wind behind them, the visitors finally levelled on 50 minutes with a curling shot from the edge of the area.

Birmingham moved up a gear and then began to score like clockwork - regularly at five-minute intervals.

Mansfield started the game with a squad of 20 players made up of the first team, reserves and the new U15s sides. A settled team played well in the first half, both sides made a number of changes throughout the second period.

More pre-season fixtures are being planned and will be announced soon on www.mansfieldtownladiesfc.co.uk.
