League 2 Football Magazine:

It's been three seasons since Mansfield last knocked on the door of promotion and manager Peter Shirtliff will have his work cut out in getting the Stags to that level again this term. But they shouldn't be totally written off.

Shirtliff, former assistant to previous boss Carlton Palmer, got off to a flying start in his first game in charge with a 1-0 victory over Southampton in the Carling Cup. Other good results followed and a real indicator of Shirtliff's tactical know how and ability to give confidence to players came when the Stags went on an eight game unbeaten run in February.

"As a club were improving, he says "If we can start well and continue to improve you never know what we can acheive."

Everybody knows there are no easy games in League 2 and what Shirtliff will demand from his players, at the least, is consistency in their performances. If they can acheive this then the season could really take off for them.

Chairman Peter Lee has a clear vision of where he would like Mansfield to be.

"We had a difficult season in some regards last year, but we rallied and are now in a solid lift-off position for this season." says Lee, who became chairman of the club at the end of the season.

"The thing is now for everyone to pull in the same direction and take the club forward."

"I want Mansfield to be a big part of the community and i also want to help finish the ground development."

"The most essential thing is to have the first team doing well, everything follows from that."

Mansfield have experienced League 1 football in recent years. they may not get there this year but for the coming years, all the cogs are in place for promotion.
