The Stags secured a major upset at Field Mill as they beat Championship side Stoke City on penalties to head into the 2nd round of the Carling Cup.

Jason White concedead an early penalty on 11 minutes following a poor headed back pass and Dave Brammer slotted home the resulting spot kick, but just five minutes later, Jellyman had equalized for the Stags with a superb diving header. Simon Brown had the best chance to win it for the Stags during normal play when he struck the post during the 2nd half, but the game was ultimately to be decided on penalties, and with the sides locked at 1-1 at the end of extra time the shootout saw Stoke's Dave Brammer, Carl Hoeskens and Micheal Duberry all miss their spot kicks, whilst Richie Barker, Rhys Day and Gareth Jelleyman all hit the net for Mansfield.
