After impressing whilst on loan from Leicester, during the promotion season of 2001/02, Piper will get the chance to show he can return to football, following a knee problem which cut short his time at Sunderland and held back his promising career.

Now, the 25 year old will be training with the Stags in order to impress during the Pre Season.

"Matty has had five operations on his knee in the last year and rang me to ask if he could come in and train with us," Stags boss Billy Dearden told the Mansfield CHAD on Thursday.

"He seems to think he can still play League football and if he is anything like he was before he would be a big bonus to us."

Meanwhile, the Stags are having a look at former Crewe midfielder Lee Bell (24) during the Pre-Season games.
