VETERAN MUGGLETON TO CHALLENGE WHITE FOR PLACE IN STAGS' GOAL

Mansfield have signed experienced goalkeeper Carl Muggleton on a one-year contract.

The 37-year-old Leicester-born shot stopper has made almost 600 appearances for 14 clubs in his 20-year career. It included nine games on loan at Stags in the 1999-2000 season under Bill Dearden.

Manager Peter Shirtliff said he was pleased to have a second keeper to challenge Jason White, 23, who was due to resume training this week after a knee operation.

"Carl will give us good experience and will push Jason hard for a first team place," he said. "Carl is in good shape and he has done terrifically in training. He's another experienced player. He has a great attitude and a good work ethic."

Last season White was made to sit on the sidelines for long periods when another veteran goalkeeper, Kevin Pressman, was picked.

Despite Muggleton's arrival from Chesterfield, Shirtliff expects the youngster to stake a strong claim for the first team this time.

He said: "Jason learned a lot from Kevin Pressman but now he has to prove himself a competent keeper".

Stags supporters are split on the decision to bring Muggleton back to Field Mill, one said "Muggleton has certainly got experience, which is where Jason White is lacking in that department, and will provide good cover"

Whilst one has posted on a forum "Another backward step by signing an ageing keeper, we may as well kept Pressman here another year"
