Speaking to the BBC after the game, Shirtliff said "It was not a bad performance, we restricted them well.

"But we have to be a bit more ruthless in front of goal because it has stopped us getting a result.

"There is a fine line between success and failure and it is not quite going our way at the moment."

Meanwhile home boss Paul Lambert was a releived man "I don't care how we win. I just want to win. Mansfield are a decent side and perhaps they were unlucky not to get something.

"But that is the game. We stuck it out and got a goal.

"This was a big, big win for us. Jamie Young was terrific for us and his save on to the bar was sensational."
