STAGS BOSS: NO COMMENT ON HAMSHAW

Mansfield have been linked with a move for Stockport midfielder Matt Hamshaw.

Hamshaw, 24, has made 30 starts for the Hatters this season, scoring five times.

The Rotherham-born former Sheffield Wednesday trainee's impressive form has prompted talk of interest from other clubs.

Stags boss Peter Shirtliff today refused to comment on the rumour of a Mansfield approach, but a move for Hamshaw seems unlikely. Players are only allowed to move after January 31's transfer deadline day on an emergency loan.

And with Mansfield having adequate numbers to cover in the midfield area, it is questionable if the club would get dispensation to conclude a deal.

Stockport are also keen to hold onto the player. Chief executive Kevan Taylor told the club's website: "I was surprised to read the rumour because we have not received any inquiry for Matty either formal or otherwise from Mansfield."

Hamshaw played for the Hatters against Mansfield in both league meetings between the two sides this season.

The Stags drew 2-2 at Edgeley Park on the opening day and won the return fixture at Field Mill 2-1 in November.

He joined Stockport on a free transfer in August last year after being released by Sheffield Wednesday.
