New Mansfield Town signing Adam Smith says he is desperate to be a first-team regular after a frustrating season with play-off finalists York City last term.Winger Smith, 25, only started 18 games last season and is itching to get more pitch time in 2010/11.

He told BBC Radio Nottingham: "It was time for a change after not getting as much football as I would have liked.

"I'm still young, Mansfield are going in the right direction and I'm excited about the new season."

The former Chesterfield player made 15 substitute appearances for York last season but struggled to win a regular spot.

And although he knows he was often left out for tactical reasons and was offered a new contract, he said he did not want to be a bit-part player.

"It was highly frustrating especially, when you feel you can make an impact," Smith explained.

"But things came to an end when you feel it is right. I needed to go elsewhere to progress my career. And I think I've made the right choice in coming to Mansfield.

"I'm dying to get back into the Football League and it would be good to do it with a promotion.

"Hopefully I can chip in with a few goals, a few assists and bring a bit of attacking flair. I can play up front as well."
