Mansfield Town caretaker manager Duncan Russell is one of four candidates on the Stags' shortlist to become long-term successor to David Holdsworth."I am down to the final four now," said chairman John Radford. "I'll be looking to bring in someone who has a proven track record and a high win ratio.

"Russ has done well in his temporary spell as manager, gaining four points from a possible six.

"The players appear to have taken to him well," he told the club website.

"And I'll not be appointing a manager who will try and use this club as a stepping stone."

Stags chairman Radford revealed that there will be money available in the January transfer window for whoever takes charge.

I am of the opinion that we have some of the best players in this league. I don't think there'll be too much tinkering required

But he also suggests that the existing Mansfield side, who stand ninth in the Blue Square Bet Premier, just three points adrift of the play-off places, are already good enough.

"The new manager will have permission to add extra quality to the squad if needs be," said Radford. "However, I am of the opinion that we have some of the best players in this league.

"I don't think there'll be too much tinkering required."

Mansfield have now been without a manager for almost a fortnight since Holdsworth's exit on 18 November.

They beat Hayes & Yeading 3-2 in Russell's first game in charge, before drawing 1-1 on Saturday at Wrexham.
