Shirtliff: A Look Back

Last updated : 19 December 2006 By Editor
After taking over from the much self publicist Carlton Palmer, Peter Shirtliff went about lifting the Stags from their position at the foot of the League 2 table, a position in which Palmer himself had gone about assuring during his reign as Stags boss.
Carlton: Made a mess of things at Field Mill

It was Palmer himself that brought Shirtliff to the club as Assitant Manager at the begining of May 2005 saying about the man "I need someone here I know and trust and Peter is a diligent, thorough person who has experienced promotion with Barnsley and Leicester City.

"He has also done all his coaching badges and will be a very big addition to our staff.", and once Palmer had thankfully resigned after the Rochdale game in September of the same year, it was Shirtliff (albeit firstly on a caretake role) that landed the job. He was given full reigns by owner Keith Haslam on 2nd November 2005 after some impressive results as interim manager, not least a 1-0 home success over Southampton in the Carling Cup. Haslam said then of his appoitment "I'm relieved. Peter Shirtliff was the first choice.

"I discussed things with four other applicants but I think Peter, with the way he has conducted himself over the last four or five weeks, has swayed me."

"I think he is a very calm, collective person who doesn't rush into decisions. He's very level headed, he's not up and down but he's a strong character as well."

Shirtliff then went about his business quietly, getting the Stags back to playing a 4-4-2 formation, in stark contrast to the confusing tactics used by Palmer, and it paid off as the Stags steadlly climbed the League 2 table, even at one point thinking about mounting a play off challenge. The Stags eventually finished a troubled season in 16th place, a releif for some who at one point believed that Palmer would have taken us down had he stayed on.

From the outset though, Shirtliff's tenure as Stags boss would see continued protests against owner Keith Haslam, allegations of money mis-spent would dominate his reign as Stags boss, and leave supporters constantly on the backs of Haslam, leaving Shirtliff in a difficult position.

Pre-Season of the current campaign, went better than anyone could have thought, as the Stags swept all before them, leaving supporters dreaming of a promotion push.

Of course it didn't turn out that way, and now Peter pays for it with his job. It is not the first time Haslam has acted by dismissing the manager, just as the heat is being turned on him. Rumours of a big demonstration against him at the next home game were building, and now this action may result in the supporters getting behind Paul Holland instead.

Stags fans need to be reminded, that despite the recent poor performances, and rumours of dressing room fall outs, Shirtliff did an excellent job at steering us away from relegation last season, and all at StagsMAD would like to wish Peter all the best for the future because of that.
